Tradition

Black bun is a type of fruit cake completely covered with pastry. It is Scottish in origin, originally eaten on Twelfth Night but now enjoyed at Hogmanay.

No Fork

Forks were first used in the Middle Ages, but eating with one was considered scandalous. In the 11th Century, when a Greek princess died shortly after introducing forks at her wedding with a Venetian Doge (chief magistrate) Domenico Selvo, it was perceived as divine punishment.
While forks were a regular feature on the tables of nobles in Italy since the 11th Century, and used in France in the 14th Century, it was introduced in England only in 1611 by Thomas Coryat through his book “Coryat’s Curdities Hastily gobbled up in Five Months Travels in France, Savoy, Italy, &c.” Even then, he was mocked about promoting the use of forks and called “Furcifer,” meaning fork-bearer.
The upper classes of Spain were using forks in the 16th Century, as could be told from a large assortment of forks that were recovered from the wreck of La Girona, which sank off the coast of Ireland in 1588. In 1630, Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts had the first and only fork in colonial America.
So what did people eat with before using forks? They used wooden spoons, knifes and, of course, their hands.
Forks, mostly being two-tined, were known as “split spoons”. Although there are examples of four- and five-tined forks from the before the 1600s, the four-tined fork became popular only in the late 1800s

Ghost Hunters!!

The history of the Inn goes back over 400 years. The Stables, being the oldest part, is today our bar where The Grey Lady (resident friendly ghost) and her horse reside. The front house was built in the late 17th century and is watched over by a wedding stone placed above the fire place as its lintel. The couple married in the local Kirk in 1718 and were blessed by the Minister in front of the fire before the festivities started. Iona Kirk and Ewan Lindsay ran the Inn ( then a Drovers Inn) from that day on until Iona's death in 1736. It's said that the two were so in love that when Iona died the wedding stone cracked and Ewan died shortly afterwards of unknown causes. I have often wondered since this story was told to me if the Grey Lady is in fact Iona putting her horse away?

Did you know?

When cotton was first brought into the UK they did not know how to spin it, so they spun it like wool (hence where the name cotton wool comes from). By the 1830's the UK had become the richest country on the planet thanks to its sale of cotton.
Long work days were endured by the workers in these harsh times, sometimes working 12-14 hours a day. In due course the 'tea break' was introduced into the daily routine where the workers could have a refreshing hot drink that was also healthy (thanks to the boiling water) and, with the added sugar, it gave them energy.
An initial problem at the time was that the cheap pottery which was used for cups often broke because it could not handle the heat of direct boiling water. Hence, it became commonplace to add a dash of milk into the vessel first to stop this happening.
This ritual continues to this day...

Are you superstitious??

Are you one of the 60 million people that suffer from paraskavedekatriaphobia?
How strange, that we relate bad things with the number 13. It's not only that we act weird on Friday the 13th but there is no gate 13 at aiports, planes don't have a number 13 seat or a row 13 and hotels don't have a room 13 (as it's the same here). We don't even let 13 people sit at a table, we add a seat for our friend the Ape to the table so that there are 14 seats.
How come we have such an obsession with this date? Apperently it has something to do with the combination of the number 6 (Friday is the 6th day of the week) and the number 13. I've been told that it relates to the church and the last supper: there were 12 diciples and Jesus at the table and Judas who betrayed Jesus was the 13th to arrive.
But what if your birthday falls on a Friday the 13th? Surely, that must bring luck!
Any thoughts?

And you thought you had the house to yourself

Have you listened to the news recently? Apparently, graduates are moving back to mum and dad after spending 3 to 4 years away from home. All thanks to the economic climate and the difficulty in getting a job after graduation. Nice, istn't it??
If you are in this situation and need some time away then come and spend a nice relaxing weekend at the Inn, getting pampered and looked after instead of doing the looking after.

Cocktail

The earliest definition of cocktail was in the May 13, 1806, edition of the Balance and Columbian Repository, a publication in Hudson, New York, in which an answer was provided to the question, "What is a cocktail?". It replied:Cocktail is a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters—it is vulgarly called a bittered sling and is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion, in as much as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head. It is said, also to be of great use to a Democratic candidate: because a person, having swallowed a glass of it, is ready to swallow anything else.
Perfect Cocktail   Use a Martini Glass, fill with Ice, add Ice to the Shaker, add 16 gluggs Gin to Shaker, 4 glugs sweet Vermouth, 4 gluggs dry Vermouth, splash of Lemon Juice, tip out the Ice in the Glass, shake and strain into Glass and garnish with a Green Olive.

Big Cat

By Scott Inglis

ARE wild big cats prowling the secluded woodland areas around Levenmouth and the East Neuk?
If they are, enthusiasts are hoping they can catch one of the elusive animals on film after launching an increased effort to gather evidence of their existence.
Almost 30 cameras have this month been placed in woodland across the UK by Big Cats i
ADVERTISEMENTn Britain (BCIB) and, such is the volume of reports coming from Fife, four of them are in the Kingdom.

Good Morning

Sunday and I am sure everyone is up bright and early for the Golf at St Andrews.  If you're passing The Inn come in for Lunch, Snack, Drinks or look at our Webpage we have a good offer if you would like to stay.

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Finally!

What a day that was yesterday! It was pouring cats and dogs and with that kind of weather not many spectators ventured to watch the Open.
My thought also goes to the golfers that had to play under these conditions, but with a salary like theirs, I am not too sympathetic with them...they can endure a bit of rain.
Anyway, "better" weather today...the sun is just coming out! So, on your way to St. Andrews come and stop by the Inn for a refreshment.

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

busy, busy

The Open is just about to officially start and it's getting busy in and around St. Andrews. So, take a great deal of patience with you on your journey as one of our coach lunches had to experience on their way here as they were stuck in Cupar. At least the sun is shining today so you don't mind appreciating the beautiful Fife country side.
We serve food all day so why don't you stop at the Inn for a snack or a coffee on your way to St. Andrews and avoid the worst of the rush hour?

Time

Time is an equal opportunity employer. Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and minutes every day. Rich people can't buy more hours. Scientists can't invent new minutes. And you can't save time to spend it on another day. Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving. No matter how much time you've wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow. ~Denis Waitely

FifeDiet

Have you ever heard of the FifeDiet? This diet suggest that you "think global, eat local". It basically means that you try to eat as much local produce as possible, therefore reducing your carbon footprint and using season fruit and veg (why would you want fruit and veg that has no taste because it's not in season anyhow??)
The good news is that you don't have to travel far to eat locally sourced food. Here at the Inn we have been cooking with local ingredients for the last 14 years, way before this became a trend.
So, if you want to follow the FifeDiet just book yourself in for lunch or dinner. (Click here to see our menu)

Good News for Brits!

This is something most Brits will love to hear: drinking moderate amounts of tea and coffee can significantly reduce the risk of  heart disease! The claim is that the antioxidants found in both drinks remove free radicals from the body. But as with all of this: moderation and a otherwise healthy lifestyle is the key. ...Where's my cuppa then?!

Where to go?

A recent survey found out that France is officially the most expensive country when it comes to the cost of various items such as coffee, beer, meals, accommodation and car hire (not included are flights). It is closely followed by Switzerland, Denmark, Brazil and Russia. Even if you include flights France comes third with Japan being the most overall expensive country to visit.
With this in mind you should come to Scotland and St. Andrews as you get much more for your money than in France or Japan. Check out this link for the latest offers.
